When is the “Right Time” for Chiropractic Care?

A question I often hear is, “How do I know if I need to see a chiropractor?” Many people wonder about the “right time” to start chiropractic care, often thinking of it as something reserved for later in life or only if they’re experiencing severe pain. To answer this, let me pose a question back: When was the first time you went to the dentist?

Most of us were taught from an early age to visit the dentist regularly to prevent cavities, maintain oral hygiene, and keep our teeth healthy. It’s so ingrained that we wouldn’t imagine waiting until age 45 to see a dentist for the first time. And yet, the average age of a new chiropractic patient is about 45. If you think about it, that’s like walking into a dentist’s office for the first time at middle age, with significant tooth decay and expecting a quick fix. Chiropractic care, like dental care, works best when it’s proactive, not just reactive.

You Only Get One Spine

Unlike teeth, which can be replaced with implants or dentures, you only get one spine and one nervous system in a lifetime. Our spine and nervous system don’t have backups or replacements, making it even more important to take good care of them from a young age. And yet, while we’re taught from an early age to brush our teeth, few people are educated on how to care for their spine and nervous system.

The spine serves as the core structure of the body, housing the spinal cord, which is essentially the highway of communication between the brain and the rest of the body. The spine affects every movement, posture, and bodily function, making it central to overall health and wellness. Misalignments in the spine, known as subluxations, can disrupt nerve signals, leading to pain, discomfort, and even issues in other systems, like digestion, immunity, and sleep. This is why chiropractic care can have such a wide-reaching impact on health.

Learning From Past Generations

As a chiropractor, I’m passionate about helping future generations avoid the preventable health issues that have become common in my generation and those before me. Just the other day, I adjusted my grandmother, who is in her seventies. Over the years, she’s developed significant degeneration in her neck, causing chronic pain and restricted movement. While this degeneration is often dismissed as “just getting old,” the truth is that it likely resulted from years of uncorrected spinal misalignments. If she had received chiropractic care earlier, her spine would likely have been in better shape today.

Consider this analogy: If you never brushed your teeth or visited the dentist for decades, you’d likely experience decay and gum disease that would be difficult to reverse. Yet, we often think differently about our spines, as if wear and tear over time is inevitable. But age doesn’t determine health. If issues like cavities are not a “normal” part of aging, why should we accept chronic pain, degeneration, and limited mobility as just part of growing older?

Health is Not Just a Matter of Age

One of the biggest misconceptions is that health issues are simply a matter of aging. If that were the case, every part of our bodies would age and deteriorate at the same rate. Instead, people often experience pain, degeneration, or stiffness in one knee, one shoulder, or one side of the neck. This uneven wear and tear usually has more to do with lifestyle, posture, and unaddressed injuries than age itself.

Over time, everyday activities, stress, and even minor injuries can lead to misalignments in the spine. Sitting at a desk all day, carrying heavy bags, or staring at screens with poor posture can gradually shift the alignment of the spine, creating tension and strain. These changes may be small, but over years, they can accumulate, leading to discomfort and dysfunction. By the time these issues are felt as pain, they often reflect a pattern of wear that has been present for a long time. Chiropractic care offers an opportunity to address these underlying issues, rather than simply managing pain after it has already become severe.

When Should You Start Chiropractic Care?

The simple answer is: as early as possible. Ideally, chiropractic care should begin early in life, even as early as infancy. Why? Because the birthing process itself can create stress on an infant’s spine, leading to potential misalignments. Babies and children also face their own physical challenges—learning to crawl, walk, and play can result in bumps, falls, and other minor injuries that can impact spinal alignment. Early chiropractic care can help ensure these small misalignments don’t lead to bigger issues as children grow.

Even as adults, we often experience impacts that can misalign the spine, from slipping and falling to car accidents or even “walking it off” after minor injuries. Many people only consider chiropractic care after a major injury, but the truth is that small, repeated misalignments from daily life can be just as impactful. By addressing these misalignments before they cause significant pain or dysfunction, chiropractic care can support long-term health and prevent future problems.

Benefits of Preventative Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care isn’t just for back pain. In fact, it supports overall health by enhancing nervous system function. Some of the benefits of proactive chiropractic care include:

  1. Improved Posture: Chiropractic adjustments can help restore proper spinal tone and alignment, promoting better posture and reducing strain on the neck and back.
  2. Enhanced Mobility and Flexibility: By keeping the spine properly aligned, chiropractic care helps maintain joint function and mobility, which can support easier movement and flexibility.
  3. Better Nervous System Communication: Since the spine houses the spinal cord, misalignments can disrupt nerve signals. Chiropractic adjustments help ensure clear

communication between the brain and body, which can positively impact organ function and overall wellness.

  1. Reduced Risk of Injury: When the spine is aligned and the body is in balance, there is less strain on muscles, tendons, and joints, reducing the risk of injury in daily activities.

Taking Steps Toward a Healthier Spine

It’s never too late to start caring for your spine. Whether you’re in your 20s or 70s, chiropractic care can help improve your health and wellness.
